Radon is a radioactive, colourless, odorless and tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of uranium in the soil. When it decays it will travel through the dirt and seek any openings in the lower levels of homes. There can be many openings in the basement of homes including floor and wall cracks, open sump pits, damaged floor drains or brittle mortar between blocks.

Repairing the openings is just one step to mitigate radon gas that is entering the basement. Once the area is sealed properly, Radon Gas venting should be added to protect the occupants. Advanced Basement Systems was called to do a complete mitigation system in this home. Fixing all the cracks then adding the vent system will reduce the Radon Gas Levels making the home safe to live in.

Problem:  Unlevel concrete poses several problems for homeowners:

We removed all the old fiberglass insulation. Why? It's not the correct insulation type, for a variety of reasons. Blown-in cellulose is the appropriate application. Along with that, the pipe and wire penetrations that come into the attic are not air-tight. We need to access all of these point to ensure heat loss is at a minimum! This insulation is also full of mouse droppings (mice love pink fiberglass).
Once the removal, air sealing and new baffles are completed, the new blown-in cellulose can be installed.
