West Columbia, SC Crawlspace with Musty Smell Gets CleanSpace Encapsulation

There are many reasons why homeowners call All-Dry of the Carolinas to come to take a look at their home. It ranges from people who have noticed potential issues starting to arise to homeowners who have had problems for 15 years without ever addressing the problem and everyone in between! Fortunately, we have a solution for just about everyone that we visit, no matter what shape their basement or crawlspace may be in.

This homeowner actually had not noticed any major issues with their crawlspace, but was interested in having their crawlspace encapsulated for the many benefits it provides. The only thing they had ever noticed was a slight musty smell in the crawlspace. Through some online research they found our site and the information about the benefits of encapsulation.

We had one of our System Design Specialists go out to the home and see what we could do for this homeowner. After checking everything out, he agreed that there wasn't too much to be worried about as far as water in the crawlspace. This led to the Specialist suggesting the homeowner go with a simple CleanSpace encapsulation with a dehumidifier. Our crew came out just a few days later to install this whole system. The homeowner was extremely happy with their new, healthier crawlspace.

Crawlspace in Blythewood, SC Gets New CleanSpace Encapsulation System

This CleanSpace encapsulation was an average job for us to take on, and is something that we do almost daily. Due to our location in the Carolinas/Georgia, we tend to have a more humid climate than others. When this warm air hits the colder air in the crawlspace, it creates condensation, which usually ends up on the floor joists and insulation. If not taken care of quick enough, mold can begin to grow in these areas.

Many people don't realize this, and accept that having a humid, wet crawlspace is a way of life and there's nothing to do about it. Fortunately, this is completely false, and these problems can be fixed with just a few products and a couple days. Our Systems Design Specialist, Alex Rogers, went out to this home and figured out what would be best for this particular crawlspace.

The solution he came up with, again, was similar to many other homes but just as effective as ever. The biggest difference in this crawlspace is obviously the CleanSpace that was installed. CleanSpace makes the crawlspace look much better, but not only does it do this, but it also keeps the moisture from getting into the crawlspace. This is especially true when the CleanSpace goes all of the way up the walls, like this one.

Moisture Issues in Columbia, SC Crawlspace Leads to CleanSpace Encapsulation

Moisture problems are a pretty serious issue that need to be taken seriously when they arise. They can lead to a number of larger issues such as mold growth, wood damage, and possible foundation damage. However, if caught soon enough, homeowners don't need to worry about these problems nearly as much.

In this particular crawlspace, there are some signs of water intrusion. The most clear sign is the damp blocks on the back wall, which is an extremely common way for water to get in the crawlspace. Another important thing to note is the plastic that has been laid in the crawlspace. While many people believe that it will help prevent water intrusion, it actually does a very poor job at keeping water and moisture from getting into the crawlspace.

When looking at the after picture, the difference is clear. Our CleanSpace liner is installed so that it covers the entire crawlspace floor and the majority of the walls. The CleanSpace is sealed using a number of different methods, but all prevent moisture from getting into the crawlspace. In this crawlspace, the homeowner decided to go with a SmartDrain, which can alert the homeowner if there were to be a plumbing leak under the home.

Crawlspace in Columbia, SC Gets Much Needed CleanSpace Installation and Insulation Removal

This Columbia, SC home, before they gave us a call, was having high moisture issues in different parts of the house. High moisture, when not taken care of, can cause all sorts of problems, including breed mold.

Before we went any further, we gave the home a thorough investigation. Found in the crawlspace was a great deal of junk as well as deteriorating insulation. Now contrary to popular belief, insulation in a crawlspace doesn’t actually do anything if it’s damp. And damp insulation, like that from the home here, can’t do its job. It starts to stink, sag, and stop any chance you’ll have of a moisture free home. Even if the home didn’t have the damp insulation, there would still be issues because of the dirt floor. Water vapor can also rise up from dirt, bringing more moisture into the space to raise the humidity levels.

To fight this issue our Design Specialist recommended a few products. The one product pictured here is our CleanSpace liner. The CleanSpace is a 20 mils thick plastic liner that is reinforced with polyester cords giving it a durability that makes it almost impossible to tear. It also happens to not only make the space crawl ready, but it also brightens it tenfold.
