Humid Crawl Space Gets Sealed in Rochester, MN
An American Waterworks Service Technician, Glenn T, was performing an annual maintenance appointment on a Rochester, MN, home. The homeowner expressed to Glenn that she had concerns about the humidity in her crawl space. Glenn went to take a look at the space and measured the humidity of the space at 70%, the ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth, along with an increase in indoor airborne allergens, all of which could lead to severe health side effects. After Glenn was done with his inspection, he met with the homeowner to deliver her findings.
Glenn explained why such a high humidity level should be dealt with, and elaborated on his recommendations. Glenn wanted to use several of our products to bring the humidity level down. First, Glenn recommended our CleanSpace and drainage matting. CleanSpace is a 100% waterproof tarp that gets applied directly to the walls of the crawl space and works to direct water entering through holes or cracks in the wall. The raised dimples on our CleanSpace® Drainage Matting gives the water flooding into your crawl space a channel underneath your crawl space liner. This directs the water flooding the crawl space to the SmartPipe crawl space drain, Tony's third product recommendation. The SmartPipe's custom design includes holes on the top and front to accept water from the soil and surface of your crawl space. A special wall flange collects water from the crawl space walls and the footing/wall joint. Finally, Tony wanted to install our AprilAire dehumidifier. Even a basement with an effective waterproofing system can still develop moisture and mold problems and may feel damp. Concrete walls and floors continually absorb moisture from the soil and release it into the air in your basement, and store-bought dehumidifiers simply aren't strong enough to solve the problem. Adding an Aprilaire dehumidifier creates healthy air and can reduce the number of viable viruses in the air to less than 1% in two days' time when set to 50% RH. The homeowner agreed and work was scheduled for a few weeks later.
On the day of the installation, our Foreman, Jesus C, and his team ended up installing 496 ft of CleanSpace, 414 sqft of Drainage Matting, 1 AprilAire, and 1 SmartPipe. Now our customer can rest easy knowing her humid crawl space is healthy once more!

High Radon Levels Properly Combated in Rochester, MN
A homeowner from Rochester, MN, had just learned about the dangerous health risks that radon gas poses to a household. He knew he didn't want his family to be silently breathing in these toxic fumes, so he began to look for a radon mitigation specialist in his area. He had heard through a friend that American Waterworks offered radon mitigation in Rochester, MN. He decided to check out our website and he was impressed with the before and after images of other radon systems we had installed during our time in the industry. He decided to sign up for his FREE estimate, and a few weeks later, our Design Specialist, Brad W, was headed out to the home.
When Brad arrived, he began the inspection by placing a continuous radon monitoring test in the lowest level of the home. The goal of this test is to measure radon levels over a 48-hour time frame and then report the average levels of radon in the home. After Brad placed the test and inspected the rest of the home, he met with the homeowner. He began by saying that the homeowner had done the right thing by getting in contact with us. Brad explained that even if the radon levels were not dangerous, there is nothing wrong with having your home regularly tested for radon gas, as levels can change over time. He went on to say that the tricky thing about radon is that it's invisible, odorless, tasteless, and completely undetectable without proper testing. He said that if the radon levels came back above 4 pCi/L, then he would recommend the installation of one of our Radon mitigation systems, stating that a typical radon mitigation system consists of a large-diameter plastic pipe that connects the air beneath your foundation to the outdoors. An in-line fan sucks radon-rich air from beneath your foundation and expels this hazardous air to the exterior. Instead of entering your basement or other living space area through numerous gaps and cracks in the foundation, radon gas is extracted from beneath your foundation before it can permeate into interior space. When installed by an experienced radon mitigation specialist, a radon abatement system will lower the concentration of radon gas in your interior air to the minimal levels recommended by the EPA and other health and safety agencies. The homeowner liked the sound of Brad's plan but decided to wait to see what the results were. Several weeks later, the results returned with higher than normal levels. The homeowner called Brad and scheduled the project.
On the day of the installation, our Foreman, Dakota, led his team through a flawless installation. Now, our customer has confidence that his home is healthy!
High Radon Gas Levels Eliminated in Rochester, MN
A homeowner from Rochester, MN, was beginning the process of selling his home. Before he could confidently list his home, he knew there were several things he had to update or address. First, he was curious to see if his home had high radon levels. He knew his neighbor had recently had their home tested, so he decided to do the same. On the recommendation of a friend, he contacted American Waterworks and set up his FREE estimate. Several weeks later, our Design Specialist, Michel R, headed to the home.
When Michel arrived, the first portion of his inspection was to place a continuous radon monitoring test in the lowest level of the home. Michel explained to the homeowner that the goal of this test was to record radon levels in the home over a 48-hour time period, after which time Michel would return to read the average results. Michel informed the homeowner that, should the levels come back higher than 4 pCi/L, he would strongly recommend the installation of a radon mitigation system. Michel explained that a typical radon mitigation system consists of a large-diameter plastic pipe that connects the air beneath your foundation to the outdoors. An in-line fan sucks radon-rich air from beneath your foundation and expels this hazardous air to the exterior. Instead of entering your basement or other living space area through numerous gaps and cracks in the foundation, radon gas is extracted from beneath your foundation before it can permeate into interior space. He went on to say that, when installed by a professional, a radon mitigation system will lower the concentration of radon gas in your interior air to the minimal levels recommended by the EPA. The homeowner was very impressed with Michel's approach but decided to wait until her radon results returned. When the 48 hours were up, Michel arrived back at the home to read the results, which returned much higher than 4 pCi/L, so the homeowner and Michel sat down and found a day for the system to be installed.
On the day of the project, our Foreman, Geno M, and his team were able to successfully install the system. Now, our customer can confidently list his home for sale, knowing the new homeowners would be thankful for clean air!
